The Lifestyle Counselor Certification Program
The Step-By-Step Process

Participants enrolling in the LifeStyle Counselor Certification Program^™ will complete the training and certification process in the following steps:

Step One—Registration for the Exam Preparation Course (EPC)

Fax or mail the signed LifeStyle Counselor Certification Program Application for Exam Preparation Course (EPC) Enrollment along with your tuition payment to The LEARN Institute via:

The tuition for the Exam Preparation Course (EPC) is:
          $225 for weight management only
          $225 for stress management only
          $350 for both weight and stress management

Upon receiving your Application for Enrollment and the appropriate tuition fees, The LEARN Institute will send you the following materials:

Program Binder
Self-Administered Sample Study Questions

Participants in the Exam Preparation Course must complete the course and request an examination date (Step Three below) within one year of enrollment.

Self-Study and Sample Study Questions for (EPC)
After studying the course materials and answering the self-administered Sample Study Questions, program participants return the following to The LEARN Institute and request a date for taking the AALC’s Certification Examination:

A signed and dated Testing Policies, Procedures, and Administration Standards of The American Association of LifeStyle Counselors.

A signed and dated Application for Examination and Provisional Membership in The American Association of LifeStyle Counselors and a request for a date to receive the examination.

A Certification Testing Fee of $110 made payable to The American Association of LifeStyle Counselors.

Step Two—Take the AALC Certification Examination

After The LEARN Institute receives the completed and required information in Step One above and confirms that all candidate qualifications have been met, The LEARN Institute then submits the Candidate for Certification to The American Association of LifeStyle Counselors for examination.

Candidates complete the open-book Certification Examination within two (2) weeks of its receipt and return it to the AALC in the postage-paid UPS envelope.
Candidates return a signed statement attesting that they did not share the content of the examination with anyone; that they took the examination on their own, without the help or assistance of anyone whatsoever; and that they did not copy any portion of the examination.

Receive Provisional Certification

The AALC will score the candidate’s examination and notify candidates of the results, generally within two weeks. A score of 80 percent or higher is required to pass the examination. Candidates who do not pass the examination may retake the exam as many times as they wish within a six-month period of time (beginning with the date of the first examination) but must pay the $110 examination fee each time.

After passing the examination, Candidates for Certification become Provisional Members in the AALC and are issued a Provisional Certification that expires one year from the date of issuance. Step Three(below) must be completed within this one-year period.

Step Three —Complete the Applied Practicum Training Course (APTC) and
Receive Fellow Membership in the AALC

The final step in the certification process is becomming a Fellow Member in the AALC. Provisional Members must complete the two-day Applied Practicum Training Course (APTC) within one year of becoming a Provisional Member. The AALC recommends Provisional Members to The LEARN Institute for the APTC.

The Applied Practicum Training Course focuses on the hands-on application of counseling knowledge and skills through case studies, role playing, and group counseling activities. The different training modalities help to make learning fun, entertaining, and memorable. The interactive training gives course participants the opportunity to network with other health professionals and learn from leading faculty experts.
After Provisional Members in the AALC complete the APTC, the AALC will upgrade the members’ status to Fellow Member and issue the member a Fellow Certification.
The Applied Practicum Training Course is held at scheduled times during the year at The LEARN Institute in Dallas, Texas, or The LEARN Institute staff will come to your city for a group of six or more individuals. Please call for details.
The cost of the Applied Practicum Training Course is $295 for the Weight Management Course only, $295 for the Stress Management Course only, or $475 for both Weight and Stress Management, which can be completed in a two-day course.

Certifications Offered
     The LEARN Institute provides the prerequisite training courses for the following two certifications offered by The American Association of LifeStyle Counselors:

      Certification in Weight Management
      Certification in Stress Management
